Coins were one of the most effective ways Byzantine emperors spread their image and authority throughout the empire and beyond. They were used not only in daily commerce but also to pay foreign mercenaries and to purchase imported goods. More importantly, they acted as powerful vehicles for imperial propaganda—emphasizing dynastic succession and the emperor’s divine right to rule.

About Emperor Leontius

Leontius reigned for only three years (AD 695–698), making his coinage exceptionally rare in any grade. When Justinian II regained power and entered his Second Reign, most of Leontius’ coinage was melted down or recoined, leaving very few examples surviving today.

Coin Design

Obverse: Portrait of Emperor Leontius, declaring his authority as God’s chosen ruler.

Reverse: A monumental Cross in Jerusalem, symbolizing the empire’s Christian faith and its connection to the Holy Land.
