Gold Solidus, 4.50 g | NGC GEM Mint State 5/5 | Proof-Like Surfaces

A museum-quality example of one of the rarest and most beautifully preserved Byzantine gold coins. This solidus is tied for Finest Known, featuring proof-like mirrored surfaces that are eye-catching and nearly flawless.

Obverse: Facing bust of Emperor Phocas, crowned, with cropped beard, holding a cross on globe; inscription reads DNN FOCAS PERP AVG.

Reverse: Standing angel, Victory, facing viewer, holding P-cross staff surmounted by christogram and cross on globe; CONOB mintmark below.

Historical Significance:

Phocas seized power in 601 AD by overthrowing Emperor Maurice and ruled Constantinople until 610 AD.

Known for early popularity among citizens and staunch support of the Roman Catholic Church.

Donated the Pantheon to Pope Boniface, ensuring the preservation of one of Rome’s greatest historical buildings.
