An extremely rare Dutch gold ducat, struck in Utrecht in 1717, recovered from the wreck of the VOC ship De Akerendam. Certified by NGC Shipwreck, this coin is a remarkable piece of maritime and numismatic history.
Historical Background:
The Akerendam, a Dutch East India Company (VOC) ship, sank on 8 March 1725 near Runde Island, Norway, during a snowstorm on its voyage to Batavia.
All 200 crew members perished, and the wreck was lost until rediscovered by divers in 1972.
From the wreck, approximately 560 kg of gold and silver coins were recovered, including 6,600 gold coins, mostly rare Dutch gold ducats. Prior to this find, only a handful of these ducats were known.
