A remarkably rare Genovino, this exceptional 3.53 g coin of .999 fine gold hails from Genoa’s storied maritime trade history. While the Florentine Fiorino d’oro became widely recognized across Europe, the Genovino remained more localized, with many coins likely melted or transformed over the centuries. Today, surviving examples are exceedingly scarce, rated 100 (highest rarity) by Numista.
This coin, graded MS63 by PCGS, is the finest known example and features the unique distinction of no maker’s mark on the obverse at 10 o’clock. It is a true treasure for collectors of hammered gold or Italian coinage, with provenance traced to a private acquisition at a show in Pistoia, Italy earlier this year.
