This exceptional gold solidus features a beautiful reverse depiction of Nike, the goddess of Victory, a timeless symbol of imperial triumph.
✨ Historical Note:
NGC does not define the exact reign of this issue, as Zeno’s time on the throne was turbulent. In 475–476 AD, the incompetent Basiliscus usurped power, only to lose it within a year—after squandering over 130,000 pounds of gold. Zeno, though unpopular for his Isaurian (barbarian) roots, regained the throne and managed to rule until 491 AD, surviving repeated revolts and political intrigue.
Zeno’s rise to power came after marrying into the imperial family and tragically losing his young son, Emperor Leo II. His reign represents one of the most dramatic and unstable chapters of the late Roman Empire.
