🏛 Historical Context

The letters SPQR stand for Senatus Populusque Romanus — The Senate and People of Rome. This motto symbolized the authority of Rome’s government and its people.

As Nero’s power collapsed, multiple governors rebelled. Only Galba, governor of Spain, survived to succeed after Nero’s suicide. Galba’s short rule was defined by austerity: he refused to bribe soldiers and rejected corruption. This ultimately led to his downfall — he was assassinated by Otho in January 69 AD, marking the beginning of the turbulent Year of the Four Emperors.

Galba was the first emperor of that year, and his coinage remains one of the rarest and most desirable among collectors.
