🏛 Historical Context
Claudius, the fifth emperor of Rome, was born in Lugdunum (modern Lyon, France) in 10 BC — making him the first Roman emperor born outside Italy.
Afflicted by a disability, he was long dismissed by his family and excluded from political life. Ironically, this preserved him through the violent purges under Tiberius and Caligula. After the assassination of Caligula in AD 41, Claudius was unexpectedly declared emperor by the Praetorian Guard, as he was the last surviving adult male of the Julio-Claudian line.
Despite doubts about his fitness, Claudius proved to be a capable administrator, expanding the empire (notably the conquest of Britain) and strengthening its bureaucracy. He ruled until his death in AD 54.
